Reasons Why I Can't Write Today

There is absolutely no way I'll (this is erica) get any writing today (actually I can, I just won't because I'm full of excuses). First of all, it's a work day (but I upload my work to an internet server that I can access anywhere, including from my work computer while I'm on break). Plus, I have two kids (who actually play together quite well for an hour or so) and a husband (who likes it when he can watch ESPN uninterrupted) to take care of when I get home. Which reminds me, I have no plans for supper, so that'll take awhile (throw a roast in the oven when I get home and ignore it for two hours - voila).

Don't get me started on laundry (two minutes to load the washer, then 30 min. of waiting time, one minute to throw them in the dryer and 60 min. of waiting time), the dishes (pay the kids a buck to load the dishwasher), and sweeping the floors (okay, it's mud season, so this one I have to do, but it only takes a few min. to spot-clean). Then, even when I finish, my laptop's acting up again and I think it needs a new thing-a-ma-gig that you plug the cord into, so if I use a computer, it'll be the desktop and that's upstairs (where it's quiet and, oh, yeah, I also have paper and pens).

Every busy mom/teacher/writer needs some down time, so after my work's done, I want to check Facebook (for 5 min., tops), blog comments (respond by email throughout the day instead), other blogs (let christy do that), and email (not every 10 seconds, you don't). Wait, what's that show my family's watching (probably iCarly, ignore it, that really isn't research no matter what you tell yourself)? Oh, and hubby rented a date flick tonight, so that will take a couple hours (watch it after the kids go to bed and you're too tired to write anyway).

So, that's why I couldn't (chose not to) get any writing done today. How about you??

**Obviously, this was tongue-in-cheek. But I HAVEN'T been getting that much writing done and it's totally my own fault. I open the laptop (which actually did die again yesterday) and then I spend the entire day doing other things. I HAD time this weekend. I did do some. But I DIDN'T do as much as I should've/could've. And now you know why.**

  1. Quite a long post Erica, considering how busy you are!

Me? I've decided to continue being the busybody that I am and continue with my sad sad story about this couple. Thanks for your earlier comment. I know you said Christy will do the blog hopping, but think you can spare a couple of minutes to read the sequel, please?

As they say, the plot thickens!

  2. Interesting to see how you battle on in the same way as myself, apart from the little ones, mine are in their fifties..... I am about to begin my next children's book, a prequel to First Wolf, so I'd better get down to researching 8th century settlements pretty quick!!

  4. I hear ya, girl. It's tough. I have to wake up at 4am to get any writing done. It's push, push, push or I can't do it. Between kids, hubby, dog, and dayjob... it's a real struggle. And forget housework!
Anyway, good luck with it all, and remember it's all worth it. :)

  7. I can so relate to this post!

While my daughter was at ballet, I edited three chapters. Now to write the last 8k. If only I didn't have so many excuses....

  8. There are billions of reasons not to write, but only one reason to write, but that one reason is pretty dang huge.

  12. I keep re-editing my finished ms and writing and re-writing and re-re-writing queries. This is why I'm not writing.

  17. Wow. These sound just like my excuses. In fact, I should be writing RIGHT NOW. But here I am, reading blogs. :-)

Sometimes I think the best alternative would be to go to a place with no internet access all day long and ignore any other obligations! (I'm at the public library, but, happy surprise, it connects me to the internet automatically, ha!)

Ok. Let's all log off and go write!

PS. Thanks to both of you for stopping by the Sisterhood blog yesterday. I was super excited to read your comments!

  19. Ha, this is sooo on target! We can always find the excuses, at least some of us can! When I finally can't stand myself and my procrastination any more, I go for the BIG GUN: i.e. the public library, without my computer. Just me, my pen and paper, and a writing carrel. Being around other people who are industriously and quietly working is like a magic spell.

  20. UM, CAN I JUST SAY...WRITING CONFERENCE. ONE WEEK. AND THAT'S ALL. christy (btw i missed you while procrastinating tonight)

  21. Love all your sections in blue...and many of your excuses sound familiar too!

I think you're making a great point here though. All the excuses in the world won't stop someone writing if they want to write. And ANY excuse is good enough to stall someone whose heart isn't in it and willpower isn't quite up to the mark. (that's been me lately)

  22. Wow, those are pretty close to the excuses I use for homework. :(
